immune globulin
Gamunex-C is a purified immune globulin product from Grifols made from donated human plasma. It replaces missing antibodies in primary immunodeficiency and can raise platelet counts in immune thrombocytopenic purpura.
This page is based on the FDA-approved Gamunex-C label and the Health Canada product record; the mechanism is explained in plain language, and analogies are used only where they stay accurate.
How it works
Explains what the medicine does in the body, not dosing, side effects, or safety.
An analogy
A person with primary immunodeficiency is like a fortress whose armoury is empty - every attack gets through. Immune globulin is a delivery of thousands of borrowed weapons, antibodies collected from many donors, stacked back into the armoury so common invaders are recognised and disarmed until the next delivery.
In simple terms
People with primary immunodeficiency cannot make enough antibodies, leaving them vulnerable to repeated infections. Immune globulin products contain IgG antibodies purified from the plasma of many donors. Infused regularly, they provide ready-made protection against a wide range of germs. In immune thrombocytopenic purpura, high-dose infusions also redirect the immune system so it stops destroying platelets.
In depth
Gamunex-C is a sterile solution of highly purified IgG, 10 percent protein, prepared from pooled human plasma by cold ethanol fractionation and ion exchange chromatography at acidic pH, preserving antibody function without chemical modification. In primary immunodeficiency it restores opsonisation and neutralisation capacity. In immune thrombocytopenic purpura, high-dose IgG saturates Fc receptors on macrophages and modulates autoantibody production, raising platelet counts within days.

How thousands of borrowed weapons disarm invaders
- People with primary immunodeficiency cannot make enough antibodies, leaving them vulnerable to repeated infections.
- Immune globulin products contain IgG antibodies purified from the plasma of many donors.
- Infused regularly, they provide ready-made protection against a wide range of germs.
- In primary immunodeficiency it restores opsonisation and neutralisation capacity.
Target: Polyclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG) pathways
Broad antibody replacement and immunomodulation; supplied IgG neutralises pathogens in immunodeficient patients and, at high doses, calms the antibody-mediated destruction of platelets.
Approved uses
Approved uses differ by country and change over time. Always follow your local prescribing information.
Approved uses in United States
FDA- Treatment of primary humoral immunodeficiency in patients 2 years of age and older, including congenital agammaglobulinemia, common variable immunodeficiency, X-linked agammaglobulinemia, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome and severe combined immunodeficiencies
- Treatment of adults and children with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, to raise platelet counts to prevent bleeding or to allow surgery
